Abstract

In geodesy it is required to assign an uncertainty measure to the results of measurement. Mostly relevant for geodetic practice are uncertainty measures which can be interpreted in a statistical meaning and which can be propagated consistently to derived quantities such as point coordinates. In this paper, various possibilities are studied and compared which have been proposed in the literature. For this purpose a catalogue of requirements is formulated regarding practical needs. As the main result, distribution-free modelling of the systematic component of the uncertainty measure seems to be more adequate than choosing a stochastic approach. This is in contrast to the recommendations of the »Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM)«.
